TEN-man Terengganu booked their ticket to the quarter-finals in style in the Sukma (Malaysia Games) men’s football competition when they thrashed neighbours Kelantan 4-0 in their opening Group C match played at the Seri Kota Secondary School ground yesterday.

The defending champions, parading 10 players from Super League sides Terengganu and T-Team, showed they were a class above the rest when they scored three goals even after they were reduced to 10 men when skipper Nur Aliff Zainal Abidin was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 40th minute.

Mohd Firdaus Fauzi opened accounts for Terengganu in the 29th minute before Joseph Kallang Tie scored from the spot kick in the 56th minute. Shamsul Kamal increased the score with a gem of a goal from a solo effort in the 59th minute before Joseph wrapped up the game with the final goal of the match in stoppage time.

Terengganu coach Khalid Mohd Dahan said it was a good start for the team but he did not expect such a big win.

“Kelantan are a spirited side but we managed to contain their fleet-footed runners even with a man down in the first half.

“We had to be careful because Kelantan came at us in the second half but we took advantage from the counter attacks to score,” said Khalid.

Kelantan have a do-or-die match against Penang tomorrow. A win will put them back in contention for the quarter-finals.

In another match, Mohd Farderin Kadir starred with a brace in Selangor’s thumping 4-0 win over Sabah in a Group D match played at the Hang Tuah Stadium. Wan Hoesne Mohd and Safiq Rahim added the other goals.
